NEXTDC and Piller Join Forces in Data Protection
Producer of high performance power protection systems and converters, Piller has been commissioned by one the largest data centre operators in Australia, NEXTDC Limited (“NEXTDC”), to supply large-scale Uniblock UBTD Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS) to its new purpose-built data centre facility in Port Melbourne, Victoria.
The design will utilise a state-of-the-art electrical distribution scheme known as Isolated Parallel Bus (IP-Bus); widely used in the United States but the first of its kind to be supplied to the Asia Pacific market. The IP-Bus system provides a redundant UPS scheme that is scalable to 20 megawatts in a concurrently maintainable and fault tolerant configuration. It provides the key features of a traditional solution but with the major advantage of additional redundancy and improved efficiencies normally expected only from more traditional N+1 redundant arrangement.
“After a comprehensive evaluation of various technologies, Piller was selected for its world-leading Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supply (DRUPS) solution to supply an Isolated-Parallel-Bus (IP-Bus) system that will provide the highest reliability and availability for our new-build data centres”, said Mr Bevan Slattery, CEO of NEXTDC. “Whilst other data centre providers are looking to use traditional Diesel Rotary UPS systems, only Piller’s IP-Bus system provides highest level redundancy and flexibility NEXTDC requires. Being the first large data centre operator to implement IP-Bus system in Asia Pacific, it allows NEXTDC to showcase the cutting-edge technology and provides ease of doing business to its customers”, added Mr Slattery.
Jonathan Davis, Managing Director of Piller Australia says: “NEXTDC was impressed by our IP-Bus topology that offers ability to configure a massive UPS system of up to 20 megawatts in low voltage. The IP-system is ideal for applications for large scale electrical infrastructure investment that require the highest level of protection with industry leading return on investments. The system is also an outstanding environmental choice as it reduces the number of redundant units and avoids running units on standby compared to traditional Diesel Rotary UPS configurations”.
“The first Piller Diesel Rotary UPS units have started arriving at M1 and will be fully commissioned by the end of the year. “We are extremely delighted to work with NEXTDC who are continuing to set new standards for premium data centres and are quickly achieving their vision of becoming one of the most trusted and recognised data centre brands in Australia and New Zealand”
In addition to supplying DRUPS solution to NEXTDC, Piller is currently developing various case studies promoting its world-class product and an IP-Bus power system simulator based on Port Melbourne deployment that will benefit NEXTDC customers.
Piller and NEXTDC’s strategic relationship will be further expanded through establishment of NEXTDC’s Australian data centre sites as Piller’s Asia-Pacific reference sites highlighting reliability, efficiency and cutting-edge design.

About NEXTDC
NEXTDC was established in May 2010 by one of Australia’s most successful information technology and internet entrepreneurs, Mr Bevan Slattery, to build and operate premium data centres in Australia and New Zealand. NEXTDC is the only ASX-listed independent data centre operator with strategic footprint in all major growth markets in Australia, namely Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Sydney.
NEXTDC offers a range of highly flexible, scalable, resilient and secure collocation services to corporate, government and wholesale customers. NEXTDC’s purpose-built facilities have been designed to address the market’s growing appetite for energy-efficient, independent data centres in which organisations can host their critical IT infrastructure, and also to address the emergence and growth of cloud (internet-based) computing. As a cloud enabler, NEXTDC’s enterprise-class data centre facilities address the challenges of security, connectivity and neutrality that have hindered the wider acceptance of cloud computing.
