Gladiator Royal Cup success in Ibiza
Ibiza 6 July. Tony Langley’s team, with Chris Larson calling the tactical shots, completed their best 52 SUPER SERIES regatta result yet when they took second step on the podium, one point up on the third placed 2012 52 SUPER SERIES champions Azzurra.
Gladiator led the table on day 2, when they won the light wind race to seize the overall regatta lead. After a three hour wait for a breeze to build, the contest started in just 6kts of wind from the SE, Langley’s team picked the strongest breeze and were especially quick at the top of the first windward leg, able to round the top mark with a good lead over Provezza with Ran rounding third. The win for Gladiator gave Langley’s crew a three point lead over Quantum Racing which finished fourth.
On day 4 Gladiator proved their staying power as well as their skills when they won the 33 miles long game coastal race, holding off regatta leaders Quantum Racing all the way round the long upwind-downwind passage which took the 52 SUPER SERIES up to the NE corner of Ibiza to the finish line off the entrance to the Ibiza town harbour. Tony Langley: “I had Quantum Racing breathing down my neck for a couple of hours on the windward leg. I was just thinking: ‘these guys don’t make mistakes; you just have to keep concentrating’. That is the thing for me, benchmark against the best, the only way to improve!”
